Pompeii is the most visited archaeological site in the world thanks to the remains of the city submerged in the ashes of the eruption of the Vesuvius in 79 AD that caused its destruction.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, the city of Pompeii was founded before the 6th century BC. The eruption buried the entire city under volcanic sediments and then was forgotten for over 1500 years.
